CERAMICS & INDUSTRY
Ceramics are broadly defined as “inorganic, nonmetallic materials that exhibit such useful properties as high strength and hardness, high melting temperatures, chemical inertness, and low thermal and electrical conductivity but that also display brittleness and sensitivity to flaws” (Merriam-Webster, 2018). We announced in January that National Clay Week’s focus for 2018 is exploring clay in all its forms through the lens of industry. NCW will define the topics we are highlighting within industrial ceramics. We will feature both small-batch makers who are producing large-scale and some of the largest manufacturers of ceramic products in the US. We will showcase production and use of these objects and the tools and makers who create them.
But first, we want to welcome the new additions to the NCW team who will help produce this year’s National Clay Week. Amanda Barr’s term as social media coordinator has come to an end as she enters her MFA program at the University of Montana this fall. This year we are pleased to have ceramic artist and educator Sara Truman from Gainesville, Florida, take over the social media position.
We have added several new volunteer and intern positions as well! Hayne Bayless joins us as the NCW team copy editor. Jessica Sharples and Meghan Tranauskas are our graphics interns, Liz Cleary and Sarah-Anne Winchester are working with Ben Carter as our open studio communications interns. We are super packing in the Sara(h) team because three are better than one! Our third Sarah, Sarah Hahn, is our ceramics club volunteer, Melanie Shaw is our ceramics businesses volunteer, and Tim Compton and Kelly Shaw will be working together as our art center volunteers. And our fearless leaders steadily at the helm remain unchanged, NCW creators Lindsay Oesterritter and Stephen Creech.
We still have internships and volunteer positions available on our website and would love for you to join us in whatever capacity you can this year! Whether it’s hosting an event, participating in our Instagram tags and contests, or being part of our team, we are excited to have you join National Clay Week!
